The main reasons why a large proportion of today’s population maintain an unhealthy lifestyle on a day to day basis are:

    • The lack of basic knowledge of what is good food and what is bad food.
    • The food industry is constantly producing and heavily marketing unhealthy choices. Furthermore, many foods are engineered to be addictive (i.e. full of sugar and salt).
    • Lack of basic knowledge with regards to the connection between fitness and health.
    • Being a victim of our old habits.
    • Constantly being under pressure by friends and within the family.

Controlling your nutrition and ensuring that you are consuming fresh, low in saturated fat and high in vitamin and mineral food as well as getting a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, lean meats (or meat alternatives) etc, not only improves your physical health but also increases your energy levels so that you’re getting more out of life and reduces the risk of various diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. An ongoing healthy lifestyle also supports a healthy immune system so that your body is more resistant when fighting bacteria.

In this article, we are not able to cover everything to a great depth; however we provide a framework that will guide you to be able to start to address the most important aspects of healthy living that will help you and us to achieve your goals.

The first step is to identify what is right and what is wrong in your day to day nutrition. It is important to start from the basics. This can be done by checking how much sugar you are consuming on average per day to start. It is easily found in the amounts you add to your coffee and tea and sugar that is integrated in other food that you eat during the day. Multiply that by 30 and then again by 12 and it will be clear and a lot more vivid just how much sugar you are consuming on monthly and annually. Naturally, we’re not supposed to consume processed or artificial sugar at all. Do the same calculations for the amount of saturated fat you are consuming per day, per month and per year. There are other nutrition aspects that are important to address however it is important to start from the basics. We will continue to educate and share knowledge however it is highly important to learn more about it and educate yourself.

As we mentioned before, the food industry is a major contributor in this issue. We need to learn how to deal with it so that in time the food industry will have to adapt to smarter consumers who demand quality and healthy options. Until then lets utilize the basic regulations that the food companies are obligated to which is providing nutritional information on each product they produce. Start to read these labels, we recommend to avoid products which do not display the nutritional information clearly and/or is confusing. It should be simple enough so that you can make the healthy decision not to buy and keep in your house products high in sugar, high in fat, which contain preservatives and are processed. In general, we recommend avoiding this and going for basic and natural products.

Being active is something that our bodies require naturally. The modern lifestyle suppresses the capability and capacity to complete the minimum amount of physical activity that we require. To deal with this we need to evaluate our day to day lifestyle and find small changes that we can apply in order to increase the amount of time that we’re active. Another aspect that is highly important and crucial to deal with this situation is to choose a fitness activity that is safe, efficient, and productive. Sprinnt’s classes are designed to provide the most efficient fitness outcome that contains a strong element of fun, in the best and most suitable environment, driven by an inspiring professional team. This creates the most sustainable formula to be happier, stronger, fitter, leaner and faster.

  • SPRINNT VISION INTO PRACTICE

    Yossi Hayoon - Sprinnt’s Founder

Seven years ago, when I established Sprinnt, it took me five minutes to write Sprinnt’s vision. This vision had been evolving in my head for several years, so it was already entrenched within me. Four years later, I would like to reflect and run a reality check to see if this vision and philosophy have been made a reality.

It is hard to miss our vision and philosophy statements as they are right in front of you on the big wall when you walk into the studio and can be viewed on the website every time that you book your bike. But on the wall and on the website, they are just words. Recently, I asked myself, ‘How am I to know if the vision that I wrote became a reality?’. The answer is in the culture that has been created at Sprinnt over these years.

Over the last 4 years, from the moment we started to put our vision into practice, it has reshaped and improved every day. A culture has evolved and has become increasingly apparent. During this time, a community that resonates with this vision, which appreciates and enjoys the Sprinnt experience has developed and become stronger. The Sprinnt vision that evolved to a culture has effectively influenced the community members’ lives and health.

Most of our members had never tried a spin class before and came with a basic or no fitness level. Yet, I can say that 100% of them have experienced results and the benefits that these results come with. Beyond the improved health and fitness that our members experience, there are additional factors that the Sprinnt team believes contribute to the experience of our spin classes. Each member starts her/his journey with a one-on-one coaching session that introduces the riding techniques, class structure, personal bike set up, how to book a class and a bike followed by two weeks of trialling, which allows them to improve the techniques and learn the foundations. By the end of the two weeks, each member has a personal review of the two-week experience where we hear each member’s feedback on his/her experience of the classes, instructors, service and general atmosphere. Furthermore, each member receives personal advice and guidance on the mid and long-term plan that is most suitable to their lifestyle, fitness and wellbeing goals. This initiates an inclusive process that progresses to a community that is involved and that communicates and socialises after each class over coffee in the studio.

In addition to the varied spin classes in our timetable, with our internally coached Sprinnt instructors, we ensure to keep educating our members holistically in other aspects of health and fitness, such as the right nutrition to support their health plan, objectives and lifestyle, as well as the chance to learn and practice how to prevent injuries using our foam roller workshops and collaborating with highly professional and experienced physios.

Every aspect of the culture is built on successful and proven experience. The team and I lead by example. The community is diverse; from 10 to 76 years old, diverse professions and lifestyles, families and groups of friends. The Sprinnt community appreciates and enjoys the uncompromised level of service, flexibility, holistic approach, being inspired, constant innovation, creativity and fun. Every spin class on our timetable is delivered with a high level of energy and every special themed spin class is unique, creative and a super fun event.

So, going back to our vision and philosophy that was written before we opened the studio doors:

    • Health and Fitness is our lifestyle
    • Spin classes is our passion
    • We set an example, inspire and practice what we preach
    • We believe in a holistic approach – a better lifestyle with fitness, fun, health and community involvement.
    • Fast results with a sustainable, safe and long-term approach.
    • We train and educate you, so that you can continuously improve your fitness, health and lifestyle

I can proudly say that these 6 points are the DNA of Sprinnt’s culture and the reason that our tag line “Once you sit on the Bike Everything Changes” has never felt stronger.

MEET A TRADER: YOSSI HAYOON OF SPRINNT SPINNING STUDIO, CAMBERWELL

    Camberwell Shopping

A spin studio in Camberwell is helping people to get fitter, stronger and healthier.

Sprinnt, located in Riversdale Road, only opened in December 2014 but has quickly built a community of spin class members.

Managing Director and instructor Yossi Hayoon ditched life as a corporate executive in favour of being more active and focusing on his health. Originally from Israel, Hayoon moved to Australia about 16 years ago and has been working in the fitness industry for 13 years.

Hayoon decided to start his own business after noticing a gap in the market for spin classes.

“The fitness business is too generic and I wanted to create something different. I believe people will appreciate my unique classes, professional service and personal attention,” he said. Hayoon believes in practicing what you preach, and uses this approach to keep members coming back week after week.

“First of all, you need to set an example – you need to be fit, you need to look fit and you need to be knowledgeable.

“For me, it’s a lifestyle. I like being fit and active. It’s the way I want to live my life.

“And no matter what kind of day I’ve had, once I sit on the bike everything changes.”

    A NEW DESIGN

Several months of planning went into creating the design of the physical studio and the format of the spin classes, Hayoon said.

“There is a lot of work that has gone into designing the class. There is a methodology behind the design of the class,” he said.

The spin studio is designed in a way to encourage inclusive activity, with about 35 bikes set up in a U-shape and the instructor at the front. With other riders positioned all around you, it’s easy for participants to feel like they’re in the challenge together, Hayoon said.

“The design of the studio was intentional, to make the class feel inclusive. You feel like you are in it together with everyone else who is riding. You can feel the energy,” he said.

The class starts with a solid warm up before increasing the intensity for a consistent period of time. The intensity level is then dropped slightly with a focus on maintaining that level before moving into a cool down phase.

“The class has been designed in a way to allow participants to reach optimal fitness and get a full, overall workout,” Hayoon said.

“It takes riders through different intensities, terrains, and resistance.”

    CREATING A COMMUNITY

Part of Hayoon’s intention when starting Sprinnt was to build a community of likeminded people.

At the end of each class, members are encouraged to stick around for a cup of tea or coffee, some fresh fruit and a chat.

“I felt that the community aspect of spin classes was missing elsewhere and I wanted to create something different,” Hayoon said.

“I think people want to belong to a group. And that community experience gives them another aspect of motivation to come and exercise and be inspired and learn from one another.

“It’s amazing; people are changing their lives here.”

The spin studio also offers occasional themed classes as a way to change the normal routine and give members a new challenge.

Examples of recent themed classes include a 90-minute endurance session and a class that had live musicians playing tunes that members cycled to.

“With the themed classes, it’s a chance to move away from the conventional spin class and have something different,” Hayoon said. “It also gives members the chance to get involved as we encourage them to share their ideas and talents for a themed class. It’s another way we are getting the community involved.”

    A SPIN CLASS FOR EVERYONE

Sprinnt is leading the charge in offering a spin class that is suitable for all ages and fitness abilities.

“Participants in our classes range from 10 years old through to 75. They are riding together and encouraging each other even though they are different ages and have different fitness levels,” Hayoon said.

The class is designed so that participants can make it as hard as they can manage, so people of varying fitness levels or abilities can still participate. It’s a very encouraging way to exercise because you can start at a point and work your way up, Hayoon said.

“We have had so many people come here who were afraid of this exercise or who haven’t exercised for many years. They couldn’t manage the first class but after two or three months they’ve managed a 90-minute endurance class. They’re feeling stronger, fitter and happier.”

Hayoon said although the classes are intense, they were designed to push participants in a safe way.

“You’ll be surprised how quickly your body will adjust with each class. Your body will accept the change,” he said.

    SPINNNG HEALTH BENEFITS

    Dr Rick Davids

My name is Rick and I am an Osteopath and Nutritionist working at Everything’s Connected on Riversdale Road in Camberwell. I recently had the opportunity to attend a spin class at SPRINNT. SPRINNT is a state of the art Spin studio that specialises in delivering the highest quality spin classes experience in order to enhance the fitness, health and wellbeing of the local community. I had attended several spin classes in previous years, but nothing has come close to what I can only describe as a truly invigorating exercise experience! SPRINNT offers a welcoming environment with state of the art facilities with experienced and professional instructors. This has motivated me to share with you my top 5 heath reasons to give a spin class a try.

    Joint Health
Motion is lotion. Our joints have evolved to require regular motion in order to keep them healthy. Cycling involves controlled and low impact motion through the ankles, knees, hips and spinal column, which helps to improve joint mobility and strengthen the muscles crossing these joints. Cycling can be a great way keep our joints healthy and may even help to manage existing problems such as osteoarthritis.

    Cardiovascular Health
Cycling is a form of cardiovascular exercise and is an excellent workout for your heart, lungs and circulatory system. Cardiovascular exercise has been shown by numerous research studies to protect against cardiovascular disease and dramatically reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise also helps increase insulin sensitivity, lower blood pressure and improve the ratio of good and bad cholesterol levels in the blood. Being more physically active is very safe for most people, however you should check first with your doctor before you begin any exercise program.

    Weight management
Cycling can help you to lose excess body fat, maintain a healthy weight and increase your muscle tone, particularly of your thighs and bum. Cycling achieves this by increasing calorie expenditure and mobilising fats stores, helping you to burn off body fat for fuel. Due to the elevation of your metabolic rate (which can last as long as 24 hours after training!), you’ll continually burn off fat even when you’re not at home resting.

    Improve mood
Cycling (and exercise in general) helps to improve mood and wellbeing and has been shown to reduce the risk of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. When we exercise, the circulation to the brain increases significantly and we receive huge surges of of mood enhancing chemicals, such as endorphins and neurotransmitters.

    Community
Most importantly, SPRINNT provides the perfect environment for members of the community to get together in a positive way and to support each other on our journey towards improved health and wellness through fitness.

CYCLE YOUR WAY INTO THE NEW YEAR INJURY-FREE

Andrew Fooks - Renew Physiotherapy Sports Physiotherapist

Looking to get back on the bike but can’t shake that pesky cycling injury? You’re not the only one.

Cycling, be it out on the road or a stationary bike is a great form of exercise. It is a very common form of cross training by many of our patients. They range from elite to beginner athletes, social cyclists and through to those in their 60’s and 70’s.

We’ve found cycling, or more specifically spin classes, to be the perfect exercise to compliment regular Clinical Pilates, and have noticed first-hand our clients’ improved fitness, strength and postural control.

Our Women's Health Physiootherapist recommends spin classes as the ideal form of returning to cardio exercise post-natally.

Cycling’s popularity has steadily increased in recent years, which has resulted in a number of associated injuries presenting for diagnosis, management and rehabilitation at Renew Physiotherapy.

Cycling injuries most commonly arise from trauma such as a fall or an accident, but injuries can also result from non-traumatic causes such as a poor bike set up, strength, flexibility and training loads.

    Non-traumatic cycling injuries

When considering the non-traumatic cycling injuries, there are two main contributors. Firstly, sub-optimal mechanics arising from poor bike set up and/or a lack of strength and flexibility in key areas of the rider.

The cyclist has three contact points to the bike; the handlebar, the seat and the pedals. Where the body sits between these three points at any time in the crank cycle has a significant bearing on the pain that a rider may experience.

Given the repetitive mechanical nature of cycling, any deficiency in the biomechanics of the rider and mechanical set up of the bike leads to a wide range of non-traumatic injuries.

    Common non-traumatic cycling injuries include:

    • Cervical spine pain
    • Lumbar spine pain
    • Anterior and lateral knee pain
    • Saddle pain
    • Foot pain

The second significant contributor to non-traumatic pain when cycling is the rate of increases in training loads. The human body can be positively and negatively affected by increases in training load or decreases/absences of training loads respectively.

The appropriate graded progression in load allows tissue to strengthen and provide greater tolerance to training, and over an extended period builds increased resilience in the tissue to acute fluctuations in training.

    Managing your cycling injury

The clinical challenge in the management and rehabilitation of cycling injuries is in identifying the main contributors. As many injuries will resolve with time off the bike, there is a high risk of regressing if the cause of the issue is not addressed and appropriate modifications made.

Expect to explore a combination of bike set up, rider strength and flexibility, technical efficiency and progression of training loads in planning your rehab.

Of course, with all forms of exercise there are risks of injury, but the best way to avoid injury is to ensure you have the best instructors and expertise guiding you through.

For our local Hawthorn/Boroondara patients considering getting active in spin classes and not sure where to start, Sprinnt in Camberwell is a spin-specific studio where you will be individually set up, coached on the bike and guided through progressive loads in every class.

Our physiotherapists will liaise with Sprinnt spin instructors regarding patient needs.

Enjoy your summer cycling safely and pain free.
